The exhibition
Above ground features the most remarkable and high-profile discoveries in 25 years of Dutch archaeology (2000-2025), including special finds from all over the country, including all of the Dutch provinces and the Caribbean ABCSSS islands. The exhibition presents more than five hundred objects, originating from around two hundred sites. The objects were literally brought ‘above ground’ during excavations, each standing out for their significance and specific value. This might concern their outstanding beauty or newsworthiness, particular historical of scientific value, significance to society, or how an object contributes new insights about the past. For this reason, Above ground is also about research, knowledge, new perspectives and personal involvement.
The design
The design of this exhibition is inspired by the visual language of action comics. Dynamic motion that typically highlight the action and power in graphic novels form the bold backdrop for the numerous and divers exhibits. Oversized swirls, waves and sparkles emphasise the impact of each object and their radiating value. The playful yet clear-cut typographic design of extensive exhibition texts match the graphic language and add to the overall momentum and festiveness of the exhibition.
